Have Low Income and a Big Hospital Bill?
All major hospitals like Roper, MUSC, and Trident have low-income assistance services you can apply to cover most, if not all, of your medical bills. This includes all specialists seen at a hospital (e.g., Roper St. Francis), emergency services at a hospital (does not include ambulance services), and more. If you are low-income or have no income, you can apply to have your bill deeply discounted or entirely closed out. Here are the links you need:
- Trident Medical Assistance: Call (866) 492-9085 and ask: “I need to apply for Trident Health/HCA financial assistance or charity care for a medical bill. I am low-income and cannot afford the balance. Can you send me the Financial Assistance Application and tell me exactly what income documents are required?”
- Roper Medical Assistance: Fill out their Request for Financial Assistance or Medical Indigency Form and email: RSFFinancialAssistance@rsfh.com or fax: 843-402-2036
- MUSC Medical Assistance: You can apply for financial assistance through your MUSC MyChart Account. What to say “I need to apply for MUSC Health financial assistance for a hospital bill. I am low-income and cannot afford the balance. Can you help me apply through MyChart, or send me the financial assistance application and tell me what documents are required?”
Other smaller hospitals may also offer assistance. To find out, call their main line and ask if they have a low-income or no-income medical assistance program.
Additional Programs

They can prescribe medications and have psychiatric nurses who can prescribe psychiatric medications. This is not a free service. But they do take most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid.
